a million little pieces..
“A Million Little Pieces” authored by James Frey

Forgoing the legal issues arising around Frey, I found this book to be a quick read and hard to put down. I love the way Frey confronts reality and the book itself is a testament to such. “A Million Little Pieces” was a refreshingly-non-whiny account of struggle with addiction. Parts made me sigh deeply and involuntarily, parts made me squirm, parts made my hair stand on end. Frey does a magnificent job of exposing his vulnerabilities and strengths as a human. The underbelly of addiction has never seemed so virulent. The ending was a bit of a drop off, tying up terse accounts of fellow patients with utmost ambiguity. All in all, the book could have benefited from stronger editing; the stylistic acrobatics (no quotation marks, random capitalization, left-aligned text, wild paragraph breaks) may seem too self-conscious for some readers, but beyond the literary fireworks lurks a fierce debut.
